ON GROWTH

Growth means increase. I suppose it doesn't have to be the increase of something good but I like to think of it that way. You grow older and grow up and grow wiser. Flowers grow and friendships grow. Increase and betterment. I think I thought once that I was grown up, but it's a misleading way of looking at things, because you don't ever stop. Or at least, you shouldn't; because there are enough things in the world, even enough things in this one, that there's always something new to learn or experience, and that's worthwhile. Even people who can't grow older can still grow in other ways, can change and learn and increase. Can be more tomorrow than they were yesterday. It might sound like a small aspiration but I think it's worth while.
Everything has to change, everything is subject to time in some sense. I suppose everything has to end, as well. That's why it's so important to make use of the time we have, because it's not infinite and you really can never know how long you've got. So you have to do everything you can- live and learn and grow, as much as possible- not as fast as possible, but constantly. Like roses coming to full bloom; but without focusing on the end, the withering, the winter. I know no one lives forever but it's a mistake not to try to.

"I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life. To put to rout all that was not life, and not, when I had come to die, discover that I had not lived."
                -Henry David Thoreau

Well, I missed the last one, I hope that will do.

Anyway. More importantly! Thanks to Rosella's tireless efforts in coaxing the Library to cooperate, we've got our next play decided upon:

The Importance of Being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde

If anyone's interested in joining the cast-- anyone from before or anyone new, first-time actors are always welcome!-- please let me know, and try to get a hold of a copy of the book. We've got a couple in the shop and there are likely more in the Library. It isn't very long at all and I think you'll enjoy it. Once I've got a better idea of how many people we have to work with we can set a time for auditions and rehearsals and all of that, and figure out when to schedule the performance for-- but it's much smaller than Midsummer so, I can't imagine we'll need more than a month or two. Probably.

And well, that's all I have to write about for now. I hope you'll join us; or at least, that you'll come and see it when we perform!

[ooc; sjfds will make an OOC organization post for the play eventually <3 link is just there for your reference.]

I'm preempting this with:

No.

No I'm not going to be in this play.

The last thing I vowed to memorize was my Torah portion.

No. Not even if you pay me. I have post-traumatic stress disorder from my Torah portion. In front of an audience I turn into a stuttering mess.

Well, you can count me in, of course! And now that I've read things over a few times, I think I've decided that I'd like to try my hand at Gwendolen's role, unless someone else wants it very much. It really is a silly play, isn't it?

[identity profile] primrosella.livejournal.com 2010-07-01 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
And it all works out all right in the end, despite all the confusion along the way. You're right, that is quite a bit like Midsummer, in its own way.

Oh? And I would've thought you'd take on the mantle of Algernon, yourself.

Before I actually answer, could you give me an idea of how successful any hypothetical attempts I might make to get out of this would be?

I'm not sure that's information I'm prepared to divulge.

You really are quite the writer, aren't you?

I was wondering when you'd think of another play.

[identity profile] moresake.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Your school doesn't want to know that you can think independently, is that it?

Is she your new co-director, then?

[identity profile] absinthe-eyed.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
One of Thoreau's greatest. I think I learned to appreciate the sentiment somewhat belatedly.

Do you have many people interested in the play?

WHAT IS SLEEP

Better late than never.

Perhaps. I like the play. I don't act, but you knew that.

Another play? At this rate, your summer productions will become a tradition.

[identity profile] misterblackbird.livejournal.com 2010-07-03 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't object to having one a season, or even one every two seasons.

I thought you said there weren't going to be many parts in this production.
